Hiring an Account Manager can often times be a long and stressful process. Typically Account Managers are the face of a new deal or client so it is important to screen the candidate multiple times. Screening the candidate multiple times will ensure that they are always prepared and not just good at first impressions.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CANDIDATE?
A great account manager should possess the following skills;
Strong interpersonal skills
A polite, friendly and diplomatic manner.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
A good sense of humour.
Good negotiation skills.
The ability to generate ideas.
The ability to prioritise and manage several different tasks at once.
If your candidate possess these skills, it is also good to look back and evaluate the candidate based on the following questions;
1. DID THE CANDIDATE DO THE RESEARCH?
Did you feel like the candidate looked up the company online before reaching out? Since this individual will be representing your company by reaching out and meeting clients, it is great to know that they are comfortable with going out of their way to ensure they know as much about the candidate as possible before meeting. If so, that’s a great sign. Past behavior is a the best predictor of future behavior, and those research skills will come in handy on the job as well.
3. DID THE CANDIDATE LISTEN?
Account managers need to be able to listen to client concerns, remember that information, process it, and respond appropriately. If you find yourself repeating information to a job candidate, it’s likely your clients will have to do the same. When you ask the candidate interview questions, are you hearing answers to your questions?
4. DID THE CANDIDATE APPLY FOR THE POSITION CORRECTLY?
If you requested a cover letter and resume, and the candidate only sent a cover letter, or only sent a resume, follow up with them. It could be a technical issue, and everyone makes mistakes. However, if you find several mistakes during the hiring process, consider some other candidates.
5. WAS THE CANDIDATE PERSONABLE AND COMFORTABLE TO BE AROUND?
An interview process can be very stressful on a candidate, but so can meeting a potential client for the first time. You”ll need to be certain that your potential candidate can be comfortable in every environment.
